Interested in a Drafting Career?

Drafting, also known as technical drawing, is a skill that has been largely automated by CAD (computer aided design) systems, such as AutoCad. Drafting is basically creating accurate representations of objects. In order to become a draftsman, you must learn how to draft the old-fashioned way by drawing "sketches" on paper. When drafting in this manner, special tools are used to sketch lines, arcs, and circles onto the paper. It is critical that the size-aspect ratio of the object or objects being drafted match exactly what the finished product will be.

A complete understanding of geometry, trigonometry, and spatial comprehension is necessary to become a successful draftsman. Precision, accuracy, and attention to detail are also necessary skills required. You must master being able to portray a three-dimensional object as two dimensions, which is called descriptive geometry. You also must be able to draw objects as three-dimensional that would otherwise appear flat, using linear projection, otherwise known projective geometry.

To find a job as a drafter, you should have a diploma or certificate in the field. Most 4-year colleges and universities do not offer specialized drafting programs. A technical institute or community college that offers such coursework usually will allow you to graduate in two years. Tuition varies among schools. It is most helpful if you can determine the drafting specialty (such as aeronautical, architectural, civil, electrical, electronics, mechanical) you want to pursue before choosing where to get your training. The Armed Forces also provides opportunities for careers in drafting.
