Prototypes: Research And Development

Most people have a basic knowledge of the word "prototype." It is defined as the first version of a new item or invention upon which changes can be made. Its purpose is to serve as a basis or standard for other things in the same category. Taking an idea and turning it into a product is a process called "reducing the invention to practice." It is the first step in the development of a prototype. The inventor can make his own model using things found around the house, or he can hire a professional prototype company. The internet provides countless prototype companies, as well as individual people who are looking for freelance work.

A fairly recent developmental tool called rapid prototyping, also known as RP, uses computer technology to create three dimensional images. Some older systems print multiple layers of plastic ink to create a model of a computer generated image. Newer systems can freeze water to make three dimensional ice sculptures, and the most sophisticated systems can create metal molds. Rapid prototyping can save hours of time in product development. It allows users to see a model, have input and make changes without the time consumption and cost of having to make another prototype.

A good virtual or tangible prototype will make your invention easier for investors to understand and increase your chances of actually getting your product to market. It helps to find flaws and weaknesses and can help to determine the best materials for manufacturing your new product.
