The prototype is the original design. In most situations, the prototype is used to help the designers look for flaws and also to make the design better. In some cases prototypes are used to get the public’s thoughts and reactions.
There are four different types of prototypes. The first prototype is the proof-of-principle prototype, or the breadboard. The breadboard is a rough prototype; the look of this prototype is not the exact look. It does not use the exact materials. This prototype is used to help with the design approach, and it also helps to get the motions and mechanics down. It will also let the designers know if more testing is needed.
The second form of prototype is called the form study prototype. This prototype will help the designers to find the basic size. It also allows them to get the look and feel the product without the exact look of the product.
The third one is called the visual prototype. This prototype is closer to the marketable product. The model is suitable for public response, packaging make-ups, as well as photo shoots for sales. The fourth prototype is called the functional prototype. This prototype is the final test of the product. It has the look, the mechanic abilities and it also id used to make sure there is no last minute changes before production.
Prototypes are usually made for non-production. The materials used are cheaper than the production materials used on the original product. So, the next time you buy something just think of all the cost and work that went into it before it hit the shelves.
