The Manufacturing Industry

The manufacturing sector is made up of the mechanical or physical transformation of materials or components into new products, often described as plants, factories and mills. The industrial revolution led to development of factories for mass scale production. The first factories were steam powered but once the electrical grid was developed they transitioned to electricity. Assembly lines were introduced, efficiency was gained, and profits increased. As automation was introduced and increasingly replaced humans in operations, manufacturing changed as the leader in employment.

There are many types of industries divided into different classes or sectors. The primary industries are agriculture, mining and raw material extracting. Secondary industries are manufacturing and next is service production, that include intellectual services such as research and development. Steel manufacturing is centuries old, but the process for making steel is still evolving. The steel manufacturing industry has many levels including mining to producing the finished product. Steel is a basic building block of the modern world. Buildings, automobiles, bridges, and appliances are all made of steel.

Computers now have a big impact on manufacturing. Information is easily accessed and reports are timely. The ability to have rapid communication increased production. Ordering and tracking supplies is easier, tracking employee production is faster, and inventory is managed better. Plant operation performance is all tied to computers.

The manufacturing industry has provided the growth of countless industries. The output of manufacturing has changed and improved equipment, which has changed and improved out daily lives. Manufacturing is and always will be a big part of a nations progress.
