Cutting Tools

The first cutting tool was used for drilling circuit boards, and for drilling oil, and this same tool had been used for some time. It would break from time to time but was a key role in the business that was using it. These tools were made of a softer metal years ago, now a carbide steel is made. It took three years before cemented carbide came about but it is much harder. This tool was used for cutting nonferrous abrasives and metals. Cast Iron carbide particles are bonded and mixed and put into a matrix. The particles that were added made the tools last three times longer.

The cutting tools are facing a big transition. Increased global competition and the search for better quality tools is an on going demand. Since the 1990s when everyone was trying to make a good, long lasting tool is when America was trying to manufacture these tools to stay competitive with foreign companies. Small holes were placed in the tools to help fight against breakage and heat.

Tungsten steel is known as a Heavy Stone. It has the highest melting point of all with exception to carbon. Sources in scientific literature say that the temperatures vary from 3387 to 3422 Celsius. The stone is fused with metal drill bits to help drill circuit boards, and for the drilling for oil. A temperature of about 5700°C is needed to bring tungsten to boil which corresponds approximately to the sun’s surface.
