A prototype is the first working concept of a design. It starts as an experimental project; the prototype serves as the working model of the design. It takes numerous hours and many ideas to insure a new design will do what is desired. Prototypes fall into four basic categories, proof of principle, visual, functional and form.
Proof of Principle Prototype is used to test aspects of the planned final design. The choice of materials, its appearance and the mechanics of the possible design are intended to prove it will do what is expected. Form of study prototype allows the engineers to explore all the things needed in the design. Small models are made in this stage to represent the finished project. This stage is to have hands on look at the product. Visual prototype is color, texture and materials. At this stage market research, packaging, and photos for literature are done. Functional prototypes are to test the product. Engineers do final check for any design flaws and allows time for improvements.
Creating prototypes holds excitement for most. Will the idea come to life? Will it be a success, and be good for others? This is long exhausting work but the reward of the final creation is the driving force. Prototypes are used in every industry. New cars, toys, games, buildings, household items all need to start will a concept, which will need design, testing, market research, and production. A prototype is the beginning of something new.
