Engineering and its History

Dams, wheels, pulleys, and levers. What do they all have in common? They all had to be made by someone. This person used a common process we know today as engineering.

Engineering dates back to ancient times, when man first started developing levers and pulley systems. But the term itself only goes back about 700 years from the term engineer. The biggest boost to engineering came from the second Industrial Revolution. With the advent of electricity and other such tools, engineers could now begin to put their skills to good use. No longer was this just a man tinkering in his basement or shed. Labs were built and schools were created to teach these processes in greater detail. It was after this revolution that all things we know of today became widely known. Engineers could now create dams to harness the power of water and make electricity. Railways could now be constructed in more efficient ways. Still, none of this would have been possible without the earliest scholars and earliest humans creating and engineering their own societies.

Modern man could not live without engineering. It is a basic function of daily society. Roads, schools and houses all have to be built. It takes the skills of engineers and their tools to do all of that. The long history of engineering has given rise to societies and cultures across the face of the earth. In essence, their would be no world if it weren't for engineering and the men who put that skill into practice.
