Strange names and strange devices are the different cutting tools of the various cultures of the world. Many of the tools have the same characteristics but the design is somewhat changed for the different specific uses.
The axe is a well known tool. It has been used for many years and is still in use today. It is used mainly for chopping wood and kindling. Much like the axe is the adze. It has been used for hundreds of years in Europe, Egypt and New Zealand. It is used primarily for squaring logs and smoothing wood. It is also used in other countries for making canoes. The billhook tho similar in design is shorter with a curved blade and sometimes only sharpened on one edge. It is compared to the machetes of South America,the parangs of Malaysia the khukris of Nepal and the bolo from the Philippines. These tools are for clearing brush, cutting small branches from trees, and various other jobs. In the medical field we would be looking at diamond edged scalpels and lasers. The hori-hori tool is used in gardening. It is an extremely sharp tool for heavy roots and dirt. It also has many functions. String trimmers or weed whackers are very efficient in doing their job. Broaching belongs to the metalworking industry and is used in the automotive venue making such things as drive shafts and gears. Rotor broaching or wobble broaching machines are used on lathes.
Concrete saws, bolt cutters, scissors, drill bits, ceramic cutting tools, the list goes on and on. Anything used to change the dimensions, size, shape or the directions of the materials being used could be classified as a cutting tool.
