Milling Machines

A milling machine is a machine used for the shaping of solid materials such as metals. Milling machines are used for cutting tool spindles. The cutting can be performed vertically or horizontally. Cutting precision is controlled to less than .001 inches. Machines may be manually operated or mechanically automated, or automated via a computer numerical control (CNC).

A milling machine often referred to as a mill. It is used to perform cuts that such cuts on a lathe can not be performed. It operates with the raw material clamped to the fixture the milling tool rotates, very similar to a drill bit. As the cutting tool continues to cut the material the head can be lowered in as much as a thousandth of an inch until the depth for the cut is completed.

Lathe safety is an important issue in any machine shop where mill(s) are utilized. Just like with any other power tools, a mill can be dangerous if not properly used and maintained correctly. Some basic reminders are to always wear eye protection, which is normally industrial quality safety glasses with side-shields. Other ways to dress safely are to wear short sleeve shirts, shoes, remove wrist watches, necklaces, chains and other jewelry.

The selection of the correct milling machine for the tasks in a manufacturing company should be performed by a well trained skilled machinist. For the hobbyist, there are many home improvement stores that can be of service in helping you choose.
