Cutting Edge History

Machining is a method of cutting materials, usually with a power driven cutting tool. This mechanically cuts the material into a desired shape. Machine tools were invented right after the steam engine was discovered. It made the process of cutting different sizes and shapes much easier to achieve. By the 19th century, it was possible to manufacture large numbers of parts that were dimensionally accurate. Until then, everything was done with hand tools which it made the process very slow and inaccurate.

In the 20th century, there has been an amazing evolution to machining. With different speeds, adaptive controls and ac drives, designers are coming up with machine tools that deliver faster and more precise motions than ever before. A lot of these changes have been even more noticeable since the digital age. This precise technology has been very important in reducing stresses to the machines without sacrificing the response.

When we think about cutting tools, we can't help but think of the evolution and cutting edge shapes throughout the times. With the development and introduction of new materials to production floors all over the globe, there was a need for high productivity and efficiency. There was also a need for smart and very sophisticated machine tools. As the technology increased, so did the requirements for better products while keeping costs to a minimum. In the middle of the 20th century, the ISO (International Standard Organization) was introduced to guarantee that any product made always had the same specifications from one plant to the other.
