Drafting and Related Fields

Drafting is a profession that has evolved over time. It is now used to create technical drawings for anything from office products and toys to buildings and houses. There are mechanical drafters, electrical drafters, architectural drafters and aeronautical drafters. A two year Associate of Applied Science Degree is needed for most entry level drafting positions.

The drafter is expected to be able to produce a drawing or blueprint of a project using a Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) software that can store the drawing electronically. This stored drawing can be downloaded into automated manufacturing systems and used to produce immediate prototypes. Electronic storing also allows the drafter to make changes to the output quicker and easier if needed.

Although the use of CADD software is the tool of choice for most drafters, manual drawings are still used in a few cases. The drafter is trained in both manual drawing and CADD and is expected to be proficient in both mediums. Drafting tables are used for manual drawings and make it possible for the drafter to work on various size drawings.

Drafters have a lot of responsibility when creating blueprints for buildings and houses. Knowing the proper load for beams, headers, frames and foundations is a must. If the proper numbers are not noted on the blueprint and relayed to the builder, the building could be condemned due to unsafe conditions.
